Personal effects/Household goods can be imported through rebate under specific circumstances/conditions;
Forms that need to be completed by returning residents (P1160, DA304, Affidavit) - Attached
The rebate is available to returning residents, but they must be in the country, and they must be able to prove by means of their passport that they have been overseas for an unbroken period of six months or more (recently).
Foreigners who want to use the rebate facility on change of residence must hold an acceptable residence visa for SA (visitors visas are not acceptable). Generally customs look for work permits, own business visas, study visas.
The original completed forms (P1160, DA304, and Affidavit) must be presented to customs with the original passport as application to make use of the rebate. Customs will only confirm at that moment if the importer may make use of the duty and vat rebate facility.
SA customs used to allow unregistered importers to make use of a general importer facility (70707070 code), this facility is now only available to South African’s importing non-commercial, low value (in this case house hold goods) cargo. The 70707070 code will be used in conjunction with the importers ID number. The second hand / customs value must not exceed R50’000.00 |
